From the desk of Councillor David Brown
One size does not fit all
This week at City Council, my rural colleagues and I continued our fight against the idea of a “one-size-fits-all” approach to municipal governance. Rural issues need rural-specific solutions. This is a hard fact that I will continue to advocate for around the Council table. Read or listen to my comments here.
Automated Speed Enforcement
It is clear that rural road users are at an alarmingly higher risk of a serious or fatal collision than urbanites. Thankfully, the motion I introduced to conduct a rural automated speed enforcement study was passed unanimously at City Council this week. See the news coverage below or read more about it here.
Ward Updates
Water Meter Replacement Program
The City will replace several hundred small water meters in the ward - mostly in Munster, Richmond, and Manotick. Starting later this month through to early March, properties with small water meters past their useful life will receive a notification by mail containing information to book your appointment within 3 months for replacement. Resident are encouraged to look for a letter in the mail over the next few weeks. If you do not receive a letter, don’t worry: it means that your meter is not yet due for replacement.
Solid Waste Master Plan Public Engagement
The City is continuing to develop its plan to better manage waste in Ottawa. From now until March 7, share your thoughts and learn more about the City’s draft plan for managing waste over the next 30 years.
Upcoming dates for in-person public engagement sessions near our communities:
- Thursday 15 February: Open-House @ Nepean Sportsplex from 7pm-9pm
- Friday 23 February: Open-House @ Cardel Rec Complex from 7pm-9pm
Pedestrian Improvements: Fortune and Martin Streets
Due to the increased number of pedestrians using the paths from the Fox Run community into the Village at Fortune and Martin Streets, City staff will install “pedestrian ahead signs” on Fortune Street in both eastbound and westbound directions. Additionally, staff will be reviewing the area to make sure that trees are not obstructing the views of pedestrians and drivers.
Lastly, in order to help tackle speeding concerns in the area, our office has requested additional traffic calming measures to be added onto Fortune Street this year; we will have more information on this soon. Taken together, these measures will significantly improve safety for pedestrians and road users.
