From the desk of Councillor David Brown

During the Council meeting of January 25th, my council colleagues and I voted unanimously to rename Meynell Park in the Fox Run development in the village of Richmond in commemoration of Babe McRae.

Mr. McRae was a resident of the village of Richmond from the late 1940s, until his passing on December 19th, 2022, shortly after our last Council meeting.

Mr. McRae’s family has had extensive involvement in the community, through volunteering for different organizations, and running the local grocery store, convenience store and the laundromat, which is still in operation today on Richmond's main street.

Richmond’s many streets and parks are named after soldiers who settled the village in 1818, local residents and business owners who have contributed to the vibrant fabric of the village, and community members who have positively impacted the village throughout its history.

As Richmond continues to grow, I believe taking this opportunity to commemorate Mr. McRae’s contributions is not only fitting but will help connect the village’s future and its new residents with the village’s history.

The Commemorative naming of public parks and streets is an important reminder for residents about the role village residents play in growing, developing and building a strong sense of community.
