Superbowl Power Outage

It was especially poor timing for the power outage this past weekend. On a day where many tune in to watch two football teams battle it out, 1,139 customers in Manotick lost power. While the issue was with Hydro One, Hydro Ottawa had to shut down some power to mitigate damage to their grid.

Reliability of Hydro One, particularly in Manotick, is an issue we have been battling with since I started my term. Well, we finally made some headway. Below is the formal response we received regarding the outage and what Hydro One is doing to identify issues and improve service. Rest assured, this is something I personally will be keeping a close eye on.

---

On Sunday, February 12, at approximately 2:56 p.m., an outage affected approximately 1,139 Hydro One customers in Manotick. To reduce the number of customers affected by the outage, Hydro One crews rerouted power and restored approximately 869 customers at 6:55 p.m. Crews continued restoration efforts and the remaining customers were restored at 11:52 p.m.

The outage was caused by a failed insulator and downed line near Bridge St., as well as a downed line on River Road. Crews completed repairs which involved replacing an insulator and restringing power lines. As part of restoration, crews also had to coordinate with Hydro Ottawa before they were able to safely make repairs. The 869 customers mentioned above experienced a second and momentary outage later in the evening as crews completed switching to route power back to the area.

In order to address ongoing reliability concerns, Hydro One crews are currently conducting a series of inspections on the distribution equipment in the area, including line patrols and thermal imaging scans. These efforts will help identify any potential equipment repairs that may be needed. The patrols are underway right now and we anticipate they will be completed by the end of next week. We are also investigating our reliability in the region to assess causes of outages that may be impacting our customers in the Rideau-Jock ward.
