Measures being added to improve Flewellyn and Shea

As many residents are aware, there are serious concerns with respect to the intersection of Flewellyn and Shea. At its core, the offset nature of Shea as it reaches Flewellyn creates confusion with some drivers and issues with drivers unsafely navigating the intersection.

My office and I, alongside Councillor Gower and his office, have been advocating for permanent fixes to the intersection to correct these issues. Unfortunately, the intersection does not yet meet warrants for realignment or full intersection control measures, but in the meantime, City staff have agreed to implement a number of interim measures in Spring of 2024.

  • Flashing beacons with red lights on Shea and amber lights on Flewellyn will be added to alert drivers to the approaching intersection

  • Intersection warning signs will be relocated to further in advance of the intersection to provide greater notice of the intersection

  • Speed boards have been ordered to be be added to Flewellyn Road on the approaches to Shea to encourage drivers to abide by the speed limit

  • Edge line pavement markings will be added to encourage speed reductions on approach to the intersection

These measures will be assessed in the Spring to determine their effectiveness at the intersection. Inspections will be done before and after the implementation of these measures to so that the impacts can be fully understood. Additionally, a field inspection will be done in the Spring to ensure that foliage is not blocking sightlines.

My office and I will continue to advocate for full intersection modifications and traffic control. In the meantime, these interim measures are a step in the right direction for the community.

Residents with concerns about safety at any intersection are encouraged to report issues to 3-1-1.
