WIZARD QUICK REFERENCE

OBJECT OF THE GAME is to predict the exact number of tricks you will take. You get points for being correct. The player with the most points wins the game.

DEALING CARDS

● A Wizard deck contains 60 cards: regular deck of 52 (aces high), 4 Wizards (highest), and 4 Jesters (lowest).

● Each game consists of 10 hands of play regardless of the number of players at each table, dealing as follows:

○ Table of 6 players: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 cards

○ Table of 5 players: 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 cards

○ Table of 4 players: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 cards

● After the deal, the next card is turned up to determine the trump suit. If the card turned over is a Wizard, the dealer looks at his cards and identifies the trump suit of his choice. If it is a Jester, there is no trump suit for that round.

BIDDING

● The player to the left of the dealer bids first by taking one coin for each trick they intend to take. The scorer records it on the score sheet.

● The total number of tricks bid may or may not equal the total number of tricks available.

PLAYING

● The player to the left of the dealer is first to lead a card from their hand. Any card may be led. Players continue to play in clockwise order and must follow suit unless they have no cards in that suit or they prefer to play a Wizard or Jester.

● Wizards and Jesters can be played any time, even if the player has a card of the suit led.

● If the card led is a Wizard, it wins the trick and players may play any card they wish, including another Wizard. If the card led is a Jester, the suit for that round is determined by the next card played.Jesters never take a trick unless all of four players play a Jester; then, the first one takes the trick.

● A trick is won:

○ by the first Wizard played

○ if no Wizard is played, by the highest trump card played

○ if no trump is played, by the highest card of the suit led

The winner of the trick leads next.

SCORING

● Each player gets 20 points for bidding correctly and an additional 10 points for each trick bid and taken. A player whose prediction is incorrect loses 10 points for each trick that is over or under their bid. Examples: A player who bids 3 and takes 3 gets 20+(3x10)=50 points. A player who bids 3 and takes 1 loses 2x10=20 points. A player who bids 3 and takes 4 loses 10 points.
